Advertising in 1934
So, you might be asking yourself, "so what is so funny about a widow with five children?" Well.. nothing really. But it's the mere fact that THIS was considered effective advertising for the day.
Mrs. Merle Brown (our featured widow) who is described as 'sensible' noted that it wasn't easy living on her $100.00 a month (Her husband left no insurance... she seems a bit bitter) and she couldn't afford 'baking failures.' So, skimp as she must, she wasn't about to give up Royal Baking Powder.
As Mrs. Brown says, "Good butter, eggs and milk cost too much to be trusted to cheap, doubtful baking powder."
Hmmm.. maybe it's true... everything old is new again?
A Simple Springtime Dinner
A Weekend Pleasure
For instance, on weekends, I will very often make a delicious Latte for myself. The ritual itself is calming.. carefully tamping down the espresso ground coffee, steaming the milk to a wonderful foamy consistency, carefully pouring in just the right amount of milk and froth.. the result, a stunning and beautiful cup of coffee that I can for a few moments just treasure. Using our jadeite coffee cups and saucers, (with coordinating blue napkins, of course) it makes a weekend coffee just a little more special. With that first steaming sip, I briefly close my eyes and tell myself, "you deserve this... enjoy it." And, I do.
In a fast paced world, it's essential to slow it down, take a step back, and do those 'good things' no matter how silly or unimportant they may seem to others. For me, the weekend Latte is one of those good things. A friend of mine said to me just this morning, "why not just run down to Starbucks?" He doesn't quite get it. The ritual of the brew, the smell of the espresso, the sound of the frothing milk, and the gentle noise of cup to saucer, is not something Starbucks can give me. It's just a little good thing for me, myself, and I. And, we deserve it.

MSLO Launches Pet Initiative
Nestle Purina PetCare, Purina ONE to Be Lead Sponsor of Multimedia Pets Program
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. today announced the launch of a multiplatform pets initiative with www.marthastewart.com/pets as a cornerstone of the program. The website will provide fresh ideas and information related to pet care and the joys of animal companionship, including a blog from the perspective of Martha's French Bulldogs, Francesca and Sharkey, called "The Daily Wag" at http://dailywag.marthastewart.com/.
The primary sponsor for the new website will be Nestle Purina PetCare, a leading global manufacturer of pet products and an innovative marketer within the pet food industry, and its super-premium pet food brand Purina ONE.
Martha Stewart is widely recognized as an animal lover who is devoted to her pets, many of whom have been featured in the pages of Martha Stewart Living, on the nationally syndicated daily television show The Martha Stewart Show, and on Martha's popular blog on marthastewart.com. This devotion is shared by her enthusiastic fan base. According to MRI, the Martha Stewart audience includes 9.7 million dog and cat owners who share their home with a collective 21.7 million dogs and cats; they purchase more than 200 million pounds of pet food each month.
Martha Stewart, Founder of MSLO, stated: "I have been passionate about pets all my life and over the years have been fortunate to share my home with many dogs, cats, and canaries. I understand why people consider their pets to be members of their family and am delighted to be offering a website, television programming, and other content that celebrate that special relationship and help consumers to better care for and enjoy their pets."
The new website will serve as a comprehensive resource for pet owners seeking information and ideas on a broad range of topics from nutrition and grooming to fun crafts and contests. In addition to Francesca and Sharkey's blog, it will feature hundreds of videos and articles, as well as photo galleries, quizzes, and more. The website will also provide advice about pets from MSLO's experts and Purina's nutritionists and veterinarians.
Nestle Purina and Purina ONE will be featured on the new website through proprietary content, a link to Purina ONE's website -- www.purinaone.com -- and through online advertisements. As part of its multi-million dollar agreement with MSLO, Nestle Purina and Purina ONE also will be the subject of two special segments on upcoming episodes of The Martha Stewart Show. Martha recently visited the St. Louis headquarters of Nestle Purina to film one of the segments.
"Nestle Purina and Purina ONE share a passion for pets with Martha Stewart, and we're excited to be collaborating with Martha on this new website," said Michael Crawford, vice president, Consumer Insights and Communications, Nestle Purina PetCare Co. "We believe this is a great opportunity to further educate pet owners about the best ways to nourish and care for their pets."
"MSLO is focused on integrating our assets around our audience's core passion areas. We are delighted to launch our Pets franchise with the support of Purina. It's a winning proposition for MSLO, for Purina and for consumers who care about pets," said Wenda Harris Millard, President of Media and co-CEO of MSLO.
The website is part of a larger effort to build on MSLO's established presence in the category and leverage its extensive library of pet content. Pet content, integrations and advertisements will be featured across all of MSLO's media platforms, including The Martha Stewart Show, Martha Stewart Living Radio and the company's magazines. MSLO also will explore Merchandising offerings.
During the past two decades, pet ownership in the United States has steadily increased to its highest level ever.* An estimated 63% of U.S. households -- or 71.1 million -- include at least one pet.* Consumers spent an estimated $52 billion on their pets in 2008, a number that has more than doubled in less than a decade.**

Martha Stewart: Store, Walk on the Shore, & More!
Today, I received two emails almost at the same time from my friend John who lives not too far from me and my friend Elaine, who lives in California, sharing the new finds during recent shopping trips to Macy's. Take a look at some of the new items:
Do you desire a delicious crisp salad at work? Try one of the new "Salad Chillers." The Martha blue lid holds a removable ice pack that will keep your salad well chilled all day. Also, built into the lid is a removable salad dressing dispenser. Also available are individual portion containers to pack all your favorites for that healthy lunch alternative to fast food.
Hello Blue! Hello Green! Martha and Macy's welcomes back the colors of summer with great picnic baskets, melamine dishware and glasses, and much more.
Last but not least, while the items featured in the above picture are not new, it's a reflection of Macy's "Welcome Back Color" campaign, with store displays using 'blocks' of same color items in a single display. Attention MSLO or Macy's: I'd love to have one of the large circle logos for my collection!

The Corner Office
When you think of the incredibly talented staff at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, it would be easy to imagine the zillion and one ideas that must be floating around the office.
Last year on the Martha Stewart Show, Martha discussed the 'big idea' contest where members of the MSLO staff presented ideas for consideration. I ran across that show on a DVD not too long ago and it got me thinking... "If I was the boss, I would..."
My ideas would take pages and pages of this blog. As a consumer of "Martha-everything" I know what is attractive to me; but I'm curious as to what YOU would do if you had the corner office. What new licensing agreements would you forge? Would you envision a Martha store? A live plant partnership with a well known distributor? Share your thoughts... I'd love to read your ideas.

The Heirloom Gardener
The Beekman Heirloom Tomato Collection includes: Brandywine (a personal favorite), Yellow Pear, Cherokee Purple, White Wonder, Kellogg's Breakfast and Black Cherry Tomato.
The Beekman Historic Landreth Zinnia Collection includes: Giant Lavender Queen, Giant Orange King, Giant Purity White, and Giant Scarlet King.
Not only does heirloom gardening keep history alive, it provides the home gardener with varieties that are no longer commercially available.
The seed packets alone are works of art! I'll be placing my order soon. I hope you'll do the same.

Decorating for Easter
With great flower punches and incredible glitter from Martha Stewart Crafts, you can embellish small Easter basket candy holders or glitter your colored eggs for that added sparkle. Line your glittered eggs in egg cups for a bit of sparkle on your dinner table. As always, Martha Stewart crafts are available at Martha Stewart Crafts, Michaels, Wal-Mart stores, and other retailers.
Another charming idea is a beautiful egg garland. Color or glitter the eggs in a color scheme that coordinates with your decor. This garland will look wonderful in any room of the house! Get the how-to here.
Calling All Gardeners!

Martha Stewart Living Undergoes Redesign
Martha's calendar returns!
There are two new sections debuting in April. The Briefing (page 37) is a section to keep readers informed about everything from books to exhibitions, from events to food trends. In keeping with MSLO's commitment to healthier living, Apothecary (page 43), provides updates on the lastest wellness information and advice on choosing the best beauty products and tools.
Fashion makes it's official debut with this issue (page 61) and will be a regular feature in the magazine. April looks at essential spring jackets.
The last page of the magazine, "Cookie of the Month" has been renamed to The Last Course. It's scope will expand beyond cookies and feature recipes for other sweet and savory treats. Not to worry.. readers are assured that they are not forgetting about cookies... they will still be featured from time to time.
With fresh graphic redesigns and page layouts, Martha Stewart Living ushers in spring as it should be - with a fresh look and a fresh start. ______________________________________________
My thanks to Louis G. from Gestures for sharing his pictures and information on the April issue. Please visit Louis on his blog. You'll be inspired!
